John 18:1-27

Father, every bit of the person You’d have me to be, I long to be.

****************************************************************************

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, “WHO IS IT YOU WANT?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I AM HE,” Jesus said … When Jesus said, “I AM HE,” they drew back and fell to the ground. (v 4-6 NIV)

“This relates the great power which Jesus breathed with a single word, that we might learn that the ungodly had no power over Him except so far as He permitted.  He replies mildly that it is He whom they seek; and yet, as if they had been struck by a violent hurricane, or rather by lightning, He prostrates them on the ground.” –John Calvin

Your simple words sent a detachment of soldiers reeling back, Lord Jesus.  You held the power to stop the entire arrest … BUT … You CHOSE not to end it.  You even healed one who was harmed.  You let the arrest take place, knowing somewhat of a “trial” was to come.  And You knew a conviction and sentencing were not far off either.  The further result of this arrest loomed ahead of that moment in time … You could see it … You chose to accept it and move forward toward Your own crucifixion.

The reality here, though, is that Your view into the future didn’t stop at the cross.  You could see all the way through Your grave, your resurrection, Your ascension, Your sending of the Holy Spirit, Your Church’s birth and growth over the years, my choice in following You and surrendering completely to You, Your return, and all the way to that Day when You and I stand face to face, in one another’s presence for eternity!

Thank You, Jesus, for letting Your hands be bound and for allowing Your arrest.  SO much to come was set in motion by Your inaction … just so that one day I would meet You, trust You, follow You and allow You to make me just like YOU!  I love You, Jesus!  Amen.
