Mark 6:6-13, 30-44

Show me Jesus, Father, and show others the Jesus in me.

How fun it is to see this part of You, Jesus! So often You do the unexpected and bring about the unimaginable.

After You’d sent the twelve out to preach “with joyful urgency that life can be different,” (6:12 MSG), You gathered them together.  You listened to what they’d been doing, where they’d been, what they’d said, and so on.  Then, You decided to take them on a retreat, away from all the folks You’d sent them to serve, “to a quiet place and get some rest” (6:31 NIV).

Yet those plans for a retreat were changed.  People saw You and the guys leaving.  Their hungry hearts, minds and bodies fervently sought You out.  They ran from everywhere to be where You were headed when You arrived.  Then, Mark wrote of Your reaction, “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd” (6:34 NIV).  Another version says “… At the sight of them, His heart broke — like sheep with no shepherd they were.  He went right to work teaching them” (6:34 MSG).

Somewhere along the way, the disciples came to You to point out how late it was, that it was nearly time for the evening meal and that location was pretty far from any place to purchase food.  Here’s when You did what they hadn’t fathomed!  You responded to them with, “You give them something to eat.”

Oh boy!  THAT threw those boys into shock.  They instantly calculated the cost to purchase all that food and nearly dropped their jaws at what they heard You asking them to do.  Of course, THEY were only thinking in the “natural” — they forgot Who they were with.  It must have slipped their mind that they had recently witnessed Your power over the winds and waves.  In addition, they’d learned that You are Lord over demons, disease and death.  Surely, You are also Lord over dinner!   😉

You asked them what they had, then You began with that to show what Your power could do with it.  You took a small lunch and stretched it to feed a crowd.  Plus, some food was left over!

You ask me the same question really: “[What] do you have?”  You take my little and make it a lot.  You ask for what I have, calling me to give it to You.  Then, You bless it, and hand it back to me in order to share it with others.  Here I am, Lord.  Take what “lunch” I have.  Use me to touch the world in which You’ve placed me, as You continue to make me just like Jesus.  Amen.
