1 Corinthians 12

Yes, Lord! My life is in YOUR hands.

“God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere;
    but they all originate in God’s Spirit.
God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere;
    but they all originate in God’s Spirit.
God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere;
    but God Himself is behind it all.
Each person is given something to do that shows who God is:
    Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits.” (12:4-6 MSG)

Father, how diverse and extensive is Your Church!  You’ve put us together in the manner which You know will best carry out Your plan for redeeming this world from slavery to sin.  You’ve fashioned us into a Body, setting Your Son, Jesus as the head.

“Your body has many parts–limbs, organs, cells–but no matter how many parts you can name, you’re still one body.  It’s exactly the same with Christ.  By means of His one Spirit, we all said good-bye to our partial and piecemeal lives.  We each used to independently call our own shots, but then we entered into a large and integrated life in which HE has final say in everything.”

Thanks for drawing me to You, Lord, to become part of those “many parts.”  Thanks too for connecting my life in varying depths to so many other parts of this Body.

“I want you to think about how all this makes you more significant, not less.  A body isn’t just a single part blown up into something huge.  It’s all the different-but-similar parts arranged and functioning together … As it is, we see that God has carefully placed each part of the body right where He wanted it.”

Thanks for the different ways You’ve gifted Your people and how You place us together to work alongside one another in building Your kingdom.  You’ve fashioned this person for this role, that person for that role, and another person for another role.  Then, You even put together folks whose roles complement one another’s.  You’re more than amazing, Father!

“But I also want you to think about how this keeps your significance from getting blown up into self-importance.  For no matter how significant you are, it is only because of what you are a PART of … What we have is one body with many parts, each its proper size and in its proper place.  No part is important on its own.”

Humility … a rare find at times … yet You have promised grace to the humble, Lord.  For any little thing I am able to do, You deserve ALL the glory, with none saved for me.  You are my Source, my Strength, my Sustainer, my Shield … Everything I say and do is for YOUR honor and glory.

So many different kinds of parts are in this Body.  Not always is it easy for some parts to coexist with other parts, but You value EACH part equally.  This whole thought is why the humility is so very necessary.  Each part is simply a “part” of a greater whole.  Each part in that whole MUST be in that whole for it to be whole.  Thanks for the reminder to value each of my brothers and sisters in Christ.  Help me to genuinely do so.

“The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t.  If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing.  If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.  You are Christ’s body — that’s who you are!  You must never forget this.”

Thank You for making me part of Your Body.  Keep me a healthy part that follows the Head everywhere and increasingly takes on His nature.  Amen.
