Colossians 1:21 – 2:5

Father, make me more like Jesus.

Father, thank You for Jesus!  Thank You that You made a way through Him for me to be brought back into friendship with You.  Your Word says that Your intention through His death was to present me HOLY IN YOUR SIGHT, WITHOUT BLEMISH & FREE FROM ACCUSATION.  And You lay out my responsibilities in this as well:  to continue in my faith, “established & firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.”  Help me to do so, to be steadfast in my faith.

Because Christ is in me, I have assurance of Your presence, “the hope of glory.”  You have given me a task here: to PROCLAIM Jesus, to ADMONISH and TEACH everyone with all wisdom, so that everyone may be presented to You MATURE, COMPLETE, PERFECT in Christ.  This task must be at the heart of every endeavor I participate in here in this life.  It is Your “energy, which so powerfully works in me” to accomplish this–nothing else, nothing less.

You are the Source of all things, Father.  When I choose to stand open to Your will, You fill me up with all of who You are.  It is You who “encourages my heart” and orchestrates my being “united in love” with others in Your Body.  Only when I seek You alone as my source of encouragement can I accept the limitations, weaknesses and differences in my brothers and sisters in Christ.

From You comes “the full riches of complete understanding.”  This depth of comprehension allows me to “know the mystery of You, God, namely, Christ.”  Thanks so much for what You let me know about You and how You help me to truly know You.  Keep me from being deceived into believing false facts about You, no matter how “fine sounding” the arguments or reasoning might be.  Keep my faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ, firm and steadfast as You continue to make me just like Jesus.  Amen.

Colossians 1:15-20

Father, make me more like Jesus.

JESUS, YOU ARE . . .

THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD   (v 15 NIV)

When I look at You, I am seeing the Father.

FIRSTBORN OVER ALL CREATION   (v 15 NIV)

Before ANYthing else was, YOU were!

CREATOR — “BY YOU ALL THINGS WERE CREATED”   (v 16 NIV)

You and the Father together got to speak everything into existence.  Wouldn’t that have been fun?!  “Sun,” and boom! there it was.  “Seas, rivers, lakes, creeks,” and there they were!  (Now, did You say it like “kreek” or “krick” ?  🙂  Did You just say, “Plants & vegetation” and all the species and potential varieties and hybrids spilled out of Your mouth?  What about . . .?   🙂

You are wonderfully awesome, Father.  And to think–it is this Creator of all things who has such a deep and wide and strong love for ME!!  Thank You, Jesus!

JESUS … LOOK WHAT I CAN KNOW ABOUT YOU …

ALL THINGS WERE CREATED BY YOU & FOR YOU   (V 16 NIV)

Your fingerprints are on EVERYthing, Lord!  And everything has at its core purpose:  to bring glory to YOU.  You find glory in Your creation.

YOU ARE BEFORE ALL THINGS   (v 17 NIV)

So that would mean that all things had to have their origin in You.  You aren’t a created being–You are the Creator.

IN YOU ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER   (v 17 NIV)

Right down to the microscopic atoms, which contain positive and negative forces that should repel each other–but they don’t, You are the ultimate force that keeps things together.  You hold lives together that seem to be explosives-ready-to-blow.  You hold circumstances, people, businesses, homes, …when sin is not given the reins.  You step in to maintain, grow and make flourish these things.

YOU ARE THE HEAD OF THE BODY THE CHURCH (v 18 NIV)

You are the director, guide, manager, leader of all who belong to You.  It’s You who signal the parts of Your body to move them toward Your will.  The wild thing about Your body is that each part has its own free will.  Unlike a human body, Your body parts can choose not to do what You signal or they can choose to work together and follow Your will.

YOU ARE THE BEGINNING & THE FIRSTBORN FROM AMONG THE DEAD  (v 18 NIV)

Because of Your resurrection, You have supplied hope and assurance of new life in eternity for those who follow You.  One day, I’ll have a new “address,” no longer this body called by my name; instead, I’ll have a new place right there in the presence of all Your glory.

SO THAT IN EVERYTHING YOU MIGHT HAVE THE SUPREMACY  (v 18 NIV)

Far above all things, You are the King.  Nothing is beyond You; nothing is out of Your realm of influence or ownership.  You are the Maker, Sustainer, and Lord of all things.  May You have the supremacy in my life.  May I set aside my will and allow YOU to sit on the throne of my life, allowing You to form the heart of Jesus in me, until I am just like Him.  Amen.

Colossians 1:1-14

Father, make me more like Jesus.

Father, in the way that Paul prayed for the Colossians, I pray for me:

FILL ME WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR WILL (v 9 NIV)

“Through all spiritual wisdom and understanding” guide me into a daily walk with You in which Your will governs my thoughts and actions and words.

HELP ME TO LIVE A LIFE WORTHY OF YOU, OF BEING CALLED YOUR CHILD; HELP ME TO PLEASE YOU IN EVERY WAY. (v 10 NIV)

Any worthiness I have comes only from You.  I am a sinner, bankrupt without You and Your grace.  You alone, by the sacrifice of Jesus, have made me worthy.  Only by Your power in me and Your grace toward me, can I please You.

CAUSE ME TO BE FOUND “BEARING FRUIT IN EVERY GOOD WORK” (v 10 NIV)

No matter what condition my heart and life are in, Lord, in some way, keep me “bearing fruit,” i.e. making disciples, leading or pointing others to You somehow.

KEEP ME “GROWING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF YOU” (v 10 NIV)

Let me never stop hungering to know You more.  The more I spend time with You, the better I’ll know You.  The better I know You, the greater I’ll trust You.  The greater I trust You, the more victorious I am in this life, whether good times or tough ones.

STRENGTHEN ME “WITH ALL POWER ACCORDING TO YOUR GLORIOUS MIGHT” (v 11 NIV)

Because You are in me, Your strength is in me as well.  You bring all of who You are into all of who I am in order to shape me into all You desire me to be.

SO THAT I “MAY HAVE GREAT ENDURANCE AND PATIENCE” (v 11 NIV)

It’s Your strength in me that makes it even remotely possible to keep on through the hard days and to wait on You, Lord.  Only by waiting on You–Your timing, Your ways–will I enjoy Your best for me.

“AND JOYFULLY GIVING THANKS TO YOU, FATHER” (v 11-12 NIV)

May gratitude well up within my heart–for even the smallest things about You or from You.  May it spring from within me and burst out of my mouth at every opportunity possible, whether alone with You or with others as witnesses.

YOU HAVE QUALIFIED ME “TO SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE OF THE SAINTS IN THE KINGDOM OF LIGHT” (v 12 NIV)

You’ve set me free from the sin that once bound me and kept me from fellowship with You.  You’ve made me part of Your kingdom, a full citizen with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of one who serves the King of Kings.

YOU HAVE RESCUED ME FROM THE DOMINION OF DARKNESS AND BROUGHT ME INTO THE KINGDOM OF THE SON YOU LOVE, IN WHOM I HAVE REDEMPTION, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. (v 13-14 NIV)

Thank You, Father, for saving me, for rescuing me from sin … for Your forgiveness, mercy, and grace.  Let’s do today–as I walk with You, and You live in me … Cause my life to reflect the work You’re doing in me to make me just like Jesus.  Amen.

Next Set of Devo-Prayers: Colossians

Through these Devo-Prayers, we stepped through the Gospels–the books of the Bible that tell the account of Jesus’ life on earth (Matthew, John, Mark, and Luke). We journeyed through Luke’s other work, the book of Acts, which gives a historical account of the birth of the Church, the Body of Christ.

Then, we began diving into the letters that Paul wrote to the saints, or believers/Christians, in various cities or regions.  We finished his letter to believers in Rome–the letter to the Romans and then his letters to the believers in Corinth or 1st and 2nd Corinthians as well as the letter he wrote to the believers in Ephesus, or the book of Ephesians.  Next, we’ll stroll through Paul’s letter to the believers in Colosse, or the book of Colossians.

(Actually, the next book of the Bible in order as typically found would be Philippians. However, the text for the devo-prayers for that letter have not been found. If they are discovered, they’ll be added to the blog at a later time.)

Devo-Prayers ~ Praying through the Scriptures

Each posting contains a first-person prayer based on a particular chapter or passage from the Bible. The Bible passage reference is provided above the devotional prayer, so you can also refer to the scripture which inspired the prayer. Posts that are found via Facebook, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn usually provide an excerpt from the full post.
