Mark 7:24-27

Show me Jesus, Father, and show others the Jesus in me.

“Open” in Webster’s dictionary has these meanings:  As an adjective… “having no enclosing or confining barrier: accessible on all or nearly all sides” and “not restricted to a particular group or category of participants” and “remaining available for use…”  As a verb, one finds these: “to make available for entry or passage by turning back, removing, or clearing away” or “to make accessible for a particular purpose.”

In this passage, Father, You reveal two different kinds of “openings.”  You were setting the stage for opening the way for non-Jews to know You.  You also showed a picture of the openness You bring to an individual who has faith in You.

Your plan to redeem this world began with a nation You called out to be Your people.  Yet, You never intended for the blessings to be for only them.  That’s why You promised Abram “… all people on earth will be blessed through you” (Gen 12:3 NIV).  You even changed his name from Abram, meaning “exalted father,” to Abraham, which means “father of many.”

In verses 24-30, You tell of a Gentile (non-Jewish) woman who sought Your healing and deliverance for her daughter.  In Your conversation with her, You highlighted the differences in lineage but in doing so, You also drew out her expression of faith.  It’s that faith You were looking for.  And You opened Your hand to her by healing and freeing her child.  It was like a prelude to what You would do later through Cornelius in Acts 10, when Your Church became open to Gentiles.

Some folks brought a man to You who couldn’t hear and couldn’t speak well.  When You took him aside to heal him, You used a command that translates as “Be opened!”  Verse 35 says then, “At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly” (Mk 7:35 NIV).  Your Word brought about an opening in an individual.

In the case of the man who was deaf, You made a physical opening for a person with a Word from Your lips.  Psalm 119:18 says, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law” (NIV).  This writer is seeking a spiritual opening within the pen strokes of Your written Word.

You, Jesus, are the Opener AND the Open Door.  Your ultimate act of “opening” occurred with Your death on the cross for all people.  You opened up the path between us and the Father, removing the barricade sin had erected.  We can now have “confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by [Your blood], Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is [Your] body” (Heb 10:19-20 NIV)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for making a way for me to fellowship with my Heavenly Father.  Thank You for opening Your Church to non-Jews like me.  Thank You for working in me to open the eyes of my heart, so that I can see You at work around and in me, as You keep making me just like Jesus.  Amen.
